Aptly described as the ‘soul of the city’, Palio di Siena is one of the world’s oldest horse races and one of the most enthralling spectacles in all of sport. With its origins dating back to the 17th century, this exhilarating tradition sees 10 horses and bareback jockeys –each representing one of the Contradas (districts) of Siena – ride three laps around the Piazza del Campo. The annual renewal of culture, community and competition is an all-encompassing celebration of Europe’s finest equestrian relics.

What to Expect
CONTRADA DINNER
On the eve of the Palio, lively Contrada dinners are held across Siena, as the city celebrates this most vibrant and emotional of historic occasions.
Flexjet will be hosting an exclusive dinner and champagne reception overlooking one of the famed Contrada dinner celebrations. Join us to dine at the 15th century Palazzo de’ Vecchi, accompanied by customary Italian folk music, in addition to an overview from experts on the Palio and its rich history.

Guests embark for Villa De Geggiano
RACE DAY — THE APARTMENT
On the day of the race guests will be hosted in an apartment that looks directly onto the start line with perfect views of the pre-race negotiations and race start.
This historic apartment has 6 windows, each window which will provide space for 4 - 5 guests to comfortably view the race.
Post Palio Celebration — Villa De Geggiano
After the race guests will be driven 20 minutes outside of Siena to Villa di Geggiano which offers breath-taking views of Siena.
Surrounded by stunning gardens and vineyards that produce some of the region’s finest Chianti, Villa De Geggiano is a beautiful Tuscan Estate located just outside of Siena and has been home to the Bianchi Bandinelli family for over 4 centuries.
Guests will arrive for a Champagne reception before being seated on one long table between the house and Amphitheatre. Find time to relax after a hectic day, amongst a stunning setting, complete with vibrant alfresco dining and serenades from a 12-piece Orchestra and opera Singer performing live from the Amphitheatre.
TO ANTICIPATE
Guests are encouraged to be dressed and prepared for full summer eventualities; festive crowds and little to no air conditioning in most settings.
The days are long and warm which usually gives way to clear, comfortable evenings.
Proper hydration should be emphasized.
Evening dinner attire is linen or summer cocktail appropriate.
For those flying commercially to Italy, the closest major international airports to Siena are Florence Airport (LIRQ) 56 miles (1hr drive) away OR Pisa International Airport (LIRP) which is 87 miles away (1hr 45mins drive).
As in many busy European cities, and especially during the weekend of the Palio, the narrow streets in Siena will be busy and parking will be limited - so taxis are usually a better way to get around. If you are driving, the Grand Hotel Siena offers valet parking for guests. If you are flying into a local airport with us, our Owner Services team will be happy to arrange car transfers for you in the usual way.
